Libya- Fixed and mobile broadband subscribers forecast 2012-2017

0 Comments Written by

Fixed and mobile broadband subscribers in Libya are expected to grow to more than 4.2 million by the end of 2017

The number of fixed and mobile broadband subscribers in Libya are expected to grow from 1.09 million at the end of 2012 (17 percent penetration) to more than 4.2 million by the end of 2017 (57 percent penetration), representing a CAGR of 31 percent.

The speed of fixed and mobile broadband growth is varying during the forecast period. Overall CAGR of fixed broadband technologies, namely xDSL, Fixed WiMAX and fibre optic is 35 percent while the rate of growth for mobile broadband technologies, W-CDMA and HSPA is 27 percent for the same period. Despite the faster fixed broadband growth rate, mobile broadband will remain the dominant broadband technology throughout the forecast period.  Mobile broadband market share will be 79 percent of total broadband subscribers in 2017, with a slight decline from 82 percent at the end of 2012.

FTTx with 325% CAGR will exhibit the strongest opportunity in 2014-2017, followed by HSPA with 189 percent and a respectful 105 percent of WiMAX. xDSL and W- CDMA will have the lowest growth rate with 29 and 24 percent respectively.

Mobile broadband delivered over W-CDMA and HSPA networks will be the biggest substitutive technology of fixed broadband in the Libyan broadband market where the fixed broadband penetration is low due to the current fragile political stability and poor telecom infrastructure.

Concerning the speed, xDSL packages offered by Libya Telecom & Technology can reach maximum speed of 512Kbps and WiMAX packages up to 2Mbps where mobile broadband technologies speed can reach 384Kbps.

Mobile and fixed Broadband pricing are moving toward harmonisation across different speed bands and operators. A typical 100MB data package for mobile broadband costs €6 while the same amount of data costs €0.6 on an ADSL package. Some examples of 3G data plans and triple play mobile & fixed broadband tariffs are given in the tables below:
